So I saw this comment on facebook today. It was in response to a friend of mine wrongly being post blocked.
"THIS GOT YOU BANNED??? Facebook needs to get a fucking life, grow the hell up and put on its big boy/girl panties. How pathetic!"
When people use comments like this to shame obviously bad behavior, does it bother you like it does me?
I have an interesting perspective. I have always has to wear diapers because of neurologically related bladder and bowel incontinence, so every time I see comments like this, it takes me back to when I was a small child, in fostercare and I'd get crap from adults and kids because I still wore diapers and had lots of accidents and dealt with being way behind my peers because of significant developmental delays.
It was a really rough time in my life. I really hated myself and mostly because of all the stuff I had to deal with from other people.
So yeah I find comments like this to be incredibly ableist but few seem to recognize that...
Like if you don't wear panties or undies your are somehow messed up...immature. not being able to wear undies or panties because it's impractical and you would rather not have to deal with having accidents in them, gets equated with a negative because it gets swung as a negative at people who are considered immature or not picky...
Obvious this is not something I enjoy talking about because it's fucking embarrassing. These are the cards I was dealt. It took me along time to come to the realization that my issues with incontinence...it's society and it's typical worldview, that makes life so difficult for people like me. Essentially, it's what makes something as benign as bladder and bowel control issues and diapers, disabling.
I bring all this up because I want people to be mindful of the words they use when they are trying to be critical of others bad behavior. Consider that they can hurt other people. Triggering things like shame and embarrassment and self hate.
I love myself today. It took me awhile to get here. Please call out others if you see ableist language. Don't say amen. Don't be silent.
Someone mentioned it was also ageism. I agree.
Anything associated with youth at all is considered a net negative...
In society, Nothing is considered more insulting than to be an adult and be called anything referring to a baby, toddler, small child etc. We attach negativity to things associated with childhood like immaturity, skills of daily living including toileting, incompetency etc.
I hate that because children deserve to not be associated with negativity...
